Pilates is beneficial for all age levels. Joseph Pilates himself was practicing Pilates well into his 80’s. Clients as young as __ and as old as 90 have had success doing Pilates with us. I get a lot of questions from people 50 and older about whether they’re too old to do Pilates. The truth is- Pilates is one of the BEST exercises you can do as you get older. Even with optimal healthy living when we were younger, gravity itself draws us down as we age, and the most severe drop we experience in our fitness levels is when we hit 45. And we are most at risk for osteoporosis at age 45 and older. But Pilates is the perfect way to repair and strengthen the body, keeping us effectively young. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends muscle strengthening exercises 2-3 days a week, especially those focused on balance and posture—and Pilates fits this bill perfectly.
Any Fitness Level
Unlike other forms of exercise like running, weight lifting, or spin classes, Pilates is something you can do at any fitness level--today. If you’ve never worked out a day in your life, don’t fret! Pilates is scalable- it was designed to be modified and adjusted to meet people where they are. Utilizing equipment like springs on the Reformer, we can make exercises harder or easier until you feel comfortable with the movement and working specific muscles. Our instructors have guided and encouraged fitness newbies, elite athletes, and everyone in between. No matter your fitness level, you’re welcome in our studio and we know you’ll see results!
We’ve got to escape the “just for women” mentality of Pilates. Men can equally benefit-- and in fact, most men are surprised by how much Pilates challenges and strengthens their bodies! As opposed to weight lifting, Pilates improves strength without making you tight and inflexible. It’s also better than weight lifting for improving muscle imbalances. Pro NFL football players are flocking to Pilates for its unique ability to strengthen the core, improve muscle efficiency and balance, and increase flexibility-- all things that improve overall strength and speed. Tiger Woods is a known Pilates devotee and American Golf reckons that Pilates is essential to better course play: increasing distance of the swing and minimizing pain and injury.
